Synopsis
The village of Guildermere blames the dragon who lives upon the downs for their dying crops and sour milk. But this dragon is a peace-loving, poetry-spouting fellow who would much prefer a cup of tea to a battle. When Saint George arrives, the dragon and his young friend, Glaston, face quite a challenge indeed. While true to the spirit and language of the charming original, this adaptation embraces the dramatic power of what happens when misunderstanding escalates into prejudice and violence.

Characters
Glaston (Approximate ages 9-13)
Energetic, Strong-willed, Kind
Young and precocious, Glaston is a singular voice of reason amid the silly babblings of the adults of their village. Intrigued by the long-told tales of brave knights fighting battles against fierce beasts, Glaston wants to experience the glory of going toe-to-toe with a dragon; ultimately getting more than they asked for when they meet the Reluctant Dragon!
The Dragon
Bashful, Jovial, Lazy, Kind
The last dragon in the land. Their kinfolk destroyed by many battles with knights, the last dragon wants nothing to do with pillage and plunder. Instead, this dragon would rather sip tea and recite poetry! After meeting a pleasant child (who doesn’t immediately run away in fright) the dragon is happy to finally have a friend. But the other humans may be a bit more of a challenge to convince. Must be capable of animalistic sounds/movements!
Darby
Caring, Tired, Unsure
Glaston’s mother. Wants to trust Glaston’s judgment of the dragon but also easily gets swept up in the fear of the other villagers. Weary of her husband Woolchester and his wild claims about the dragon.
Woolchester
Overbearing, Superstitious, Irrational
Glaston’s father. Claims to have seen/been terrorized by the dragon– even though the claims are clearly imaginary. Certain that dragons can only be trouble, he tries to be protective of Glaston.
Kendal
Egotistical, Controlling, “Diva” energy
Noble-woman of Guildemere. Viewed as “village leader.” Egotistical and a bit of a narcissist. Cares more for their own popularity than the well-being of the village/villagers. Often conspires with Morpeth and Grimsby.
Morpeth
Simple, Superstitious, Frightened
Village tavern keeper. Loyal to Kendal, swept along by fears over the dragon. Has a certain “three stooges” energy with Kendal and Grimsby.
Grimsby
Empty braggart, Superstitious, Cowardly
A squire in Kendal’s service. Couldn’t hack it as a knight but loves to boast about almost becoming one. One third of the “three stooges” along with Kendal and Morpeth.
St. George
Courageous, Proper (by the book kind of person), Leader mentality
A famous knight and renowned dragon-slayer. He has arrived in Guildemere to fulfill his duty as a saint and dispatch the dragon but soon learns of the beast’s true nature. Works with Glaston and the Dragon to find a way for them all to live peacefully.
