Macbeth is a timeless tragedy that delves into the corrosive effects of unchecked ambition. Set fifty years in the future, the play follows the tragic downfall of Macbeth At first a brave and honorable general, his fate takes a drastic turn when he encounters three witches who prophesy that he will become the king. Seduced by the idea of power, Macbeth, spurred on by his ambitious wife Lady Macbeth, succumbs to a series of murderous deeds to secure the throne. Director's Note
Macbeth, “Through a Scanner Darkly”
I want to welcome you to a dark and possibly not-so-distant future. I time when large multinational corporations dominate the economic and political landscape. I place where ordinary life is lived on the edges of the long shadows these “megacorps” cast, and that life is driven by greed, ambition, and violence. This is the time our play occurs. A Scotland where the clans have become street gangs, science and magic combine, and where “Blood will beget Blood.” This is Macbeth through this eye of Cyberpunk, and remember, chooms “He burned down half the city just to prove he was right, and the other half just for fun.”
You might be asking why I decided to place this play in this setting, or you might be rolling your eyes. My reasoning is thus: we live in a time on the brink where power is held by the wealthy, information is manipulated by the minute, and the ability to connect to the world has only made us more isolated. The world of the play suggests a possible future if the use of devices and the state of the current world continue as they are. As power and control are willingly shifted to those who can buy it, Macbeth’s world becomes more and more a reality. When we let style reign over substance, we risk being trapped in the shadows. That is why this play is placed in this setting to caution against what could come to pass.

Cynthia Frazzini
Third Murderer, First Witch
Before taking a break in 2007 to create her finest production – her son Dominic, Cindy buzzed around town in her little yellow bug performing with a variety of companies in Columbus. Some of her favorite roles include Elizabeth Proctor in “The Crucible”, Desdemona in “Othello”, Alma in “Summer and Smoke”, Jessie in “‘Night Mother”, M’Lynn in “Steel Magnolias”, and The Woman in “The Jungle” in MadLab’s first Roulette. When Dominic was 8 years old, he convinced her to return to theater. Since then, she has been blessed to have the opportunity to appear onstage with her son six times: “The Music Man”, “You Can’t Take It With You”, “Into the Woods”, “In Search of a Prince”, “Little Women”, and now in his first Shakespeare (which ironically was also her first many moons ago), Macbeth.
